“You know what I say? Fuck the Rules.”

One of my favorite commentaries, when we’ve posted online, is everyone commenting about the issue of wearing suspenders with belts. I think this speaks to a bigger issue in men’s fashion.

You have to do what feels good. Some of the best designs have come out of experimentation and breaking the rules.

“I’ve always been a ‘swim upstream’ type of guy.”

I’ve never followed any rules as far as the clothing I wear or the tattoos that I get. Hey, is there a rule about getting tattooed “Love” and  “Hate” on your Hand? No. It should be an echo of who you are and what you do.

That should be what fashion represents. It’s not about wearing a uniform. It’s about expressing yourself, expressing your personal style and who you are.

“What I have to say about rules is... break them.”

Leather suspenders. They were originally made as workmen’s suspenders and workmen’s suspenders were made with a little loop to go through the belt because men in the field were working and it had extra support so that your jeans or your pants wouldn’t gap down.

One of the things that I think is important to remember is that you can wear it however you want. You can wear it with the belt loop, or you can wear it without. It’s not redundant.

“There are no rules in fashion. Experiment. Play around.”

I think as men we have a challenge. We get put into a box of ‘what’s going to be masculine enough,’ or ‘what’s going to be cool enough?’ We don’t want to step outside the box. Well, step outside the box. Play around.

I’ve been playing around with fashion my whole life and I think it’s an important thing. It lets me express myself. It lets me express who I am. And you know what? I’ve made some cool designs out of breaking the rules.
